Wimbledon Adopts Video Challenge System in 2025.
Wimbledon will follow the US and Aussie Opens in utilizing video review systems.
Replay systems will be launched at Wimbledon this year.
Players will gain the option to challenge certain calls from the official, mirroring the protocol currently in operation at each of the US Open and the Australian Open.
The new system is slated for use on the main stadium and Court One throughout the Championships and on the remaining show courts when they are hosting singles matches.
This step comes just a year after the All England Club rolled out electronic line calling, which brought an end to the centuries-old role of line judges.
What Can Be Reviewed?
Players cannot to challenge the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but they can ask for the official to review specific situations, including:
- Whether a tennis ball has bounced twice.
- Whether a shot made contact with an rival's racket or person during play.
- Potential hindrance at the conclusion of a point.
Importantly, there will be an unlimited number on the amount of reviews a player can ask for.
Practical Application
An illustrative example took place in a recent tournament recently, where Daniil Medvedev used the video challenge against his opponent.
Draper conceded it was a tough call for the official, but believed his rival had "used the regulations effectively."
The umpire viewed a video and ruled the player was responsible for hindrance, granting the rally to Medvedev.
Broader Adoption
Video reviews are not new for Grand Slams. It has been in use at the American major for two years and the Australian Open this year.
Additionally, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour plans to have the system implemented at all of its events.
Further Updates
Another change at The Championships this year involves the addition of visual indicators on displays to complement the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.
This addresses instances where spectators have occasionally been uncertain if a shot was in or out.
In other news, with exactly a century of days remaining until the start of the tournament, organizers have further announced an increase in daily attendance at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
