This New Horror Film Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Relationship.
We present a dare for those in enduring partnerships who enjoy scary movies: Settle in with your loved one and view Together. The critically acclaimed 2025 movie just made its online premiere on Hulu. At first glance, it may seem like conventional biological terror, but beneath Together lies a deep meditation about our choices in loving one another.
An Introductory Film Delving into Relationship Dynamics
Together represents the debut feature-length film for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It showcases actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Millie and Tim, an unmarried couple that have been together for ten years. United in marriage in reality in 2017, the actors contribute a unique chemistry to their portrayals, masterfully depicting both the joys and frustrations of a long-term relationship.
The narrative commences when Millie and Tim relocate from the urban environment to the countryside for her career. A familiar plot device, of course, but that’s primarily where the cliches conclude. Together evolves into as much a examination of mental states of the partnership as it is a body horror flick.
An Otherworldly Trigger
While walking near their new home, a violent storm occurs, and the two fall into an subterranean cavern. After a night spent there and finally finding a way out, a mysterious influence begins influencing the pair. This force induces a paranormal intimacy between them that goes well past emotional intimacy.
The entire film is a slow burn fright fest, weaving in elements of dreamlike terrors, disturbing (but tastefully done) biological grotesqueries, and surprisingly comedic interactions (sometimes in the middle of something grotesque). Shanks weaves these elements together seamlessly and wraps them up in a slowly mounting atmosphere of fear.
Layered Performances
A significant portion of Together is exclusively Brie and Franco, and they skillfully illustrate countless layers to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Millie's sense of self and sense of connection is waning due to a lack of intimacy. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his hesitance to pursue anything but his failing musical ambitions gradually emerges.
In contrast, Tim's character experiences isolation and separated by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve moved to the country and far away from his support system. He fears the idea of utterly sacrificing his personal autonomy in his partner. This fear is intensified by the fact he lacks a driver's license and relies on Millie for mobility.
The film's most intelligent aspect is that he avoids making one partner or the other the obvious villain.
Tim and Millie grapple with the type of challenges that arise in most partnerships over a long period. Deep down, they continue to care for each other. They share moments of joy, offer support, and open up at times. But beneath it all, there’s an inescapable feeling of questioning about their bond.
Symbolism and Metaphor
While the otherworldly presence in Together represent these concerns of codependency and fully committing to another person, the metaphor does not come across as hamfisted or heavy-handed. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments present a perfect parallel to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the supernatural and the personal serve the other symbiotically.
A Debated Finale
Together’s final act, which won’t be spoiled here, has created disagreement on the story's concluding statement about codependent relationships. It has been said that unattached audience members have interpreted the film as a powerful case for remaining unattached. Meanwhile, certain partners who were in conflict found that the film ended up guiding them to resolve their issues.
Regardless of your relationship status, your own reaction could potentially serve as a telling indicator of how you perceive partnership. Will the finale inspire anxiety and horror, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you identify in Tim or Millie and scream at your TV, or simply glance toward your significant other and utter, “We could get through that together”?
Whatever the case may be, Together is an exploration you can undertake at this very moment.
Together is currently playing on the streaming service Hulu as of this moment.
