No fewer than thirteen people lose their lives and ninety-eight hurt in rail accident in Mexico.
A fatal train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel censure from critics regarding the speed and execution of the country's flagship infrastructure initiatives.
The crash occurred on the Interoceanic Train, a route developed to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was designed to establish an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, intended to promote regional growth in the area.
“We are going to thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this tragedy,” affirmed the head of state.
The president reported that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The official noted plans to go to Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.
Flagship Project of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a signature public works project of the former leader, whose term ended the previous year. This rail line was closely associated with his leadership's economic agenda for the southeastern region.
Another massive rail project from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to stimulate the economy of a comparatively poorer part of the country.
Building Management and Safety Concerns
The construction of both train projects was overseen by the army, marking a dramatic expansion of its responsibilities in civilian projects. They were executed at an accelerated rate, beating forecasts to be partially launched before the end of that government.
However, this fast-paced schedule had concurrently fueled significant concerns over operational security.
- Sunday's accident was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This involves an prior collision this month when a train struck a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had two non-deadly derailments.
Demands for Review and Suspension
In the wake of the catastrophe, the leader of a primary political opposition urged an prompt suspension in the construction and operation of all comparable projects.
This stoppage was proposed until the completion of a thorough technical review. The party declared that the situation "calls for prompt explanations."
In reaction, the national leader insisted that the train had been running in total adherence to all security protocols. Commitments were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the construction and operation of these strategic undertakings.
